APEX vs. ADF Shootout

Thursday, June 19, 2008, 8:30 am – 12 pm
Lucas Jellema, AMIS and Dimitri Gielis, APEX Evangelists

For many organizations, deciding upon the tool or technology with which to create their web applications is an ongoing and far from trivial process. Oracle offers two popular development toolstacks: the Java-based Application Development Framework (ADF) and the database-oriented Application Express (APEX). APEX is often positioned as an alternative to, and compared with, MS Access, while ADF is compared frequently with other Java development tools and frameworks. A comparison between the two is, however, just as valuable. Each toolstack comes with its own advantages and disadvantages, strong and weak points. So which toolstack should you choose in which situation? What are the criteria on which to base such a decision? In this session, Dimitri Gielis, co-founder of “Apex Evangelists” ( http://apex-evangelists.com ), and Lucas Jellema, Expertise Manager at AMIS Services, will try to get you answers to these all-important questions.

Advanced Development Techniques Using Oracle BI Suite
Enterprise Edition Plus

Thursday, June 19, 2008, 8:30 am – 12 p.m.
Mark Rittman, Rittman Mead Consulting

Going beyond the basics of creating a simple semantic layer and BI dashboard, this training seminar looks at more complex Oracle BI Server data modeling techniques such as creating ragged hierarchies, incorporating real-time and historic data, persisting aggregates, and creating time-series and analytic calculations. It then looks at advanced techniques using Oracle BI Interactive Dashboards, Answers and Delivers, and discusses how Oracle OLAP and Hyperion Essbase can be used to super-charge the calculation and aggregate management features of the platform.

Installing Essbase: The Basics
Jason Novikoff, interRel Consulting
There are hundreds of pages of installation documentation in several different guides but yet in some cases they are missing critical pieces of information.  In this session, you will see the steps necessary to install and configure Essbase.  We will cover installation of the license server and discuss which versions no longer require it.  We will cover installation and configuration of Shared Services and Essbase Administration Services as well as Essbase itself.  There are several choices you can make for the third-party prerequisites; we will not cover all combinations but you will get exposure to some common steps and troubleshooting techniques.

11:00 AM-12:00 PM
Scalable Infrastructure: Clustering, Load Balancing, and Fail Over
Rob Donahue, WhittmanHart

Increasingly Essbase and Hyperion are being implemented to support functions which are critical to the daily operations of the business & enterprise as a whole.  This introduces the need to ensure that infrastructure architecture is stable and reduces the risk of performance issues or unplanned outages.  This session will focus on different options to implement a scalable & fault tolerant infrastructure.  In addition the session will discuss the considerations that drive the overall infrastructure design.
